Crocheted Swirl Shawl

The pattern for this shawl was in the form of a magazine xerox that I received at a yarn store. I was unable to track down the original. What follows is my rewriting the pattern for a class I taught at Westport Yarns. I crocheted mine in Cascade Venezia. Once you start working the pattern, you'll see that you can adjust the size larger or smaller. If you do adjust it, you will have to adjust the directions for the border.

Crocheted Swirl Shawl
Based on Bernat Pattern Style No. 2230-191

Materials: Approximately 1,000 yards of worsted weight yarn 4.5/5 sts/1”), I hook, stitch markers, tapestry needle.

Gauge: 7 sc to 2” with I hook. OR ANY SIZE HOOK THAT WILL GIVE YOU THE STITCH GAUGE.

Large Circle:
Ch 4 sts loosely. Join with sl st to form a ring.

Round 1: (ch 4, 1 sc in ring) 6 times. Join with sl st to center of first ch 4 loop. 6 loops.

Round 2: 1 sc in center of first ch 4 loop, (ch 4, 1 sc in next ch 4 loop) 5 times, ch 4, 1 sc in first sc. MM to last ch 4 loop.

Round 3: 2 sc in ch 4 loop, (ch 3, 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next ch 4 loop) 5 times.

Round 4: (Ch 3, skip first sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next ch 3 loop) 6 times.

Round 5: (Ch 3, skip first sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next ch 3 loop) 6 times.

Round 6: (Ch 3, skip first sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next ch 3 loop) 6 times.

Round 7: (Ch 3, skip first sc, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next ch 3 loop) 6 times.

Round 8: (Ch 3, skip first sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next ch 3 loop) 6 times.

Round 9: (Ch 3, skip first sc, 1 sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 sc in next ch 3 loop) 6 times.

Round 10: (Ch 3, skip first sc, 1 sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 sc in next ch 3 loop) 6 times. Approximately 6” in diameter.

Rounds 11 - 17: Ch 4 instead of ch 3 and continue to work in pattern, having 1 more sc every round (in the sc panel) until there are 15 sc in each sc panel.
Approximately 9.5” in diameter.

Rounds 18 - 22: Ch 5 instead of ch 4 and continue to work in pattern, having 1 more sc every round (in the sc panel) until there are 20 sc in each sc panel.

Rounds 23 - 28: Ch 6 instead of ch 5 and continue to work in pattern, having 1 more sc every round (in the sc panel) until there are 26 sc in each sc panel.

Rounds 29 - 35: Ch 7 instead of ch 6 and continue to work in pattern, having 1 more sc every round (in the sc panel) until there are 33 sc in each sc panel. Fasten Off, leaving 18” tail.

Large Circle should measure approximately 19” in diameter. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Small Circle - Make 2

Work as for directions for Large Circle through round 28, 26 sc in each sc panel. Fasten Off, leaving 18” tail.

Block circles by pinning outer edges, gently stretching fabric. Spray with cold water and let dry.

Joining

First small circle:
With right side facing, sl st small circle to first sc of 2nd panel of large circle.

Thread tapestry needle and weave yarn through the bumps along the back of the ch 7 of large circle.

Begin mattress stitch by inserting tapestry needle into first sc of small circle and sewing to large circle. *Sew 2 sts from large circle to 1 st from small circle, then (sew 1 st to 1 st) 2 times.* Repeat from * to * until panels match up and you’ve reached the ch’s of the next panels. Fasten off.

Second small circle as follows:
With right side facing, sl st small circle to first sc of 4th panel of large circle.

Thread tapestry needle and weave yarn through the bumps along the back of the ch 7 of large circle.

Begin mattress stitch by inserting tapestry needle into first sc of small circle and sewing to large circle. *Sew 2 sts from large circle to 1 st from small circle, then (sew 1 st to 1st) 2 times.* Repeat from * to * until panels match up and you’ve reached the ch’s of the next panels. Fasten off.

Border

With right side facing you, join yarn to top of first ch of 2nd panel of small circle of left side.

Row 1: Ch 4, skip 2 sts of ch, 1 sc in center of next space, *ch 4, 1 sc in 1st sc of next panel of small circle, (ch 4, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc) 9 times, ch 4, 1 sc in center of next space*; repeat from * to * 3 times more.

Next: ch 4, 1 sc in next sc of large circle, **(ch 4, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc) 11 times, ch 4, 1 sc in center of next space;**rep from ** to ** 2 times more.

Next: ch 4, 1 sc in next sc of small circle, ***(ch 4, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc) 8 times, ch 4, 1 sc in next space***; rep *** to *** 3 times more. End with ch 4, 1 sc in top of last ch instead of space, ch 6, turn.

Row 2: 1 sc in first ch 4 space, *ch 4, 1 sc in next ch 4 space*; rep from * to * across row, ch 6, turn.

Repeat Row 2, twice more.

Next: 1 sc in first ch 4 space, *ch 4, 1 sc in next ch 4 space*; rep from * to * across row, ch 6, turn.

Next: 1 sc in first ch 5 space, *ch 5, 1 sc in next ch 5 space*; rep from * to * across row, ch 6, turn.

Keep last loop live and begin neck edging.

Neck Edging

With right side facing you, 4 sc in next ch 6 space, 1 sc in each sc across top of shawl and 1 hdc where circles meet, ending 4 sc in ch 6 space. Fasten off.

Optional Fringe
Cut strands of yarn 22” long. Knot 4 strands in every space around side and lower edges of shawl. Trim ends. Steam lightly.
