Seriously, A Cable Decrease.

In Friday's post I wrote about cable decreases in Lois' sweater. The pattern is from the Tahki Yarns Torino & Torino Bulky Pattern Leaflet, #5 Cable Front Cardigan.  (The booklet is available at Westport Yarns.)

A reader named Elaine, posted the following comment:  "Um, color me stupid, but I've been knitting for (oy!) 50 years and have never heard of a cabled decrease. I've tried googling for online tutorials, but have had no luck. Is this something in everyone else's bag of tricks, and I never got the postcard" (By the way Elaine, thanks for commenting, I bet there were others thinking the same exact thing!)

Elaine, I'm with you.  I'd never heard of a cabled decrease either.  I just took a leap of faith and followed the directions from a technical standpoint.

This was how the cable decrease was explained:
Beg of row:  k2, sl next 2 sts to cable needle and hold to back, k2tog (1 st from left-hand needle and 1 st from cable needle), k1 from cable needle.

End of row:  work to last 5 sts, sl 1 st to cable needle and hold to front, k1, k2tog (1 st from cable needle and 1 st from left-hand needle), k2.

The end result is very cool.

Ooooh, I might have to use that for the Raglan decreases on my Schleppy sweater.
Provided that kind of fancy detail shows up in my wildly colored yarn.
