Michelle is gearing up for her winter in Florida. She's cleaning out her stash and swatching for projects; she wants to be swatched and ready when she leaves. In her stash, she found 17+ skeins of Goa by GGH (Aran: 50% Cotton, 50% Acrylic, 66 yards). Since Mary can only wear non-animal fibers, Michelle gave her the yarn. Mary is going to knit my Sunrise, Sunset sweater.
She has enough of Cascade Ultra Pima (DK: 100% Cotton, 220 yards) to knit Suit.
Michelle swatched with Panama by Rowan (Fingering: 55% Rayon, 33% Cotton, 12% Linen, 148 yards) to knit Boxy. The sweater can be knit either flat or in the round.
She did two swatches with the same needle. The bottom of the swatch was knit flat, her gauge was 21 sts/4". The top of the swatch was a mock circular swatch, her gauge was 25 sts/4". Happily she'll be going up two needle sizes. Even though it's annoying, it's really worthwhile to knit a mock circular swatch when you're swatching for something knit in the round. You're gauge can really change from flat to circular.
Michelle finished her Ann Norling feather and fan baby blanket. The yarn is Malabrigo Rios (Worsted: 100% Merino, 210 yards).
In keeping with the clean out your stash theme, Irene is looking to use this Phildar yarn to knit a poncho. She has 3 skeins of red and 3 skeins of blue. She'll either stripe it or have one side red and one side blue. There was no yardage listed on the yarn label. I had her knit 2 swatches. One with an #11 needle and one with a #13 needle.
I used the swatches, a kitchen scale and some basic algebra to figure out how far her yarn would take her. If she uses the #13 needle, she will have enough yarn to knit a 22" x 55" asymmetric poncho.
Kudos to Elaine!!! She finished knitting her Knit, Swirl coat. We discussed soaking it and blocking it. It looks great!
