For all of us it has been difficult watching the devastation that hurricane Sandy has caused without wondering, what can I do to help these victims.
One of the women in my stitch and chat, Robin, has found a way to make a difference. The week following the hurricane she loaded up her car with donated blankets, hats, gloves and cleaning supplies and headed out to Coney Island in Brooklyn. There she met an amazing woman, Pamela Harris, founder and executive director of Coney Island Generation Gap, a youth focused group servicing as many as 100 teenagers, helping them realize their physical, social, and mental abilities.
When Hurricane Sandy hit, Pamela, a former NYC correction officer, took it upon herself to organize the relief effort for the area.
Pamela now wants to get CIGG, which she runs out of her house, back up and running ASAP. Along with the rest of all Coney Island, which only recently got power back, her home has been flooded. She wants to get "her kids" active and have them film a documentary of the local relief effort. The objective is not the film, but to rebuild the minds and spirits of these disadvantaged children. Microphones, video, still and projection cameras were all lost in the storm. Robin is now trying to raise money to replace as much of this equipment as possible to help begin the rebuilding of this community.
CIGG is a not for profit 501c3 so all contributions to this effort are tax deductible and if you are interested in helping, your needed and greatly appreciated donation can be made out to Coney Island Generation Gap and mailed to Robin at 148 Old Kings Highway North, Darien, CT 06820.
