Warp Speed

Since we are offering weaving classes at Westport Yarns, Laura (the teacher) offered to give interested staff a lesson.  Of course I was interested.  Joe's comment as I was leaving, "you're taking on another hobby when you have little free time as it is?"  My answer, "no comment". 

Whenever I take a lesson in something completely new, I am reminded of how hard it is to learn the language of a craft.  The terminology is daunting. It will take quite a long time for me to really know all the moving parts in the loom.  We are using Knitter's Cricket Looms from Ashford. 

 Laura warped the loom, which means getting it all set. 

 Some parts of the process I remember better than others.

There's the new math for figuring out yardage.

 I'd tell you what all these steps are, but I don't remember. I just wanted to get to the good part.

 I know the vertical do-hickey in the picture above is the heddle. The warp are the strands running through it. 

Weft are the strands going across.  Beth told me she remembers it by remembering that weft goes left.  Often the weft and warp are different yarns.  I decided to use the same yarn because I really wanted to make the most of the hand-painted yarn.  The yarn is Ella Rae (Lace) Chunky Merino.  It is gorgeous.  I've woven approx 50" already.  It is wicked fun.

I've got all kinds of ideas for how to apply the woven fabric.
