Cabled Beret

Thing #2 wanted a slouchy, cabled beret and convertible mittens this year. I excitedly did Ravelry filtered searches for cabled berets to see what she would like. She picked 09 Cabled Tam by Jennifer Hagan that was featured in Vogue Knitting, Holiday 2008.
I must have every Vogue Knitting for at least the past 5 years. Except this one. Not a problem, just gave me a wry smile at the knitting fates. Vogue Knitting has a pattern store where you can buy single patterns from past issues.

This beret was supposed to be (as far as I knew) her holiday knit gift. Then one day she blithely mentioned that she wanted the beret to wear on a school trip to DC - in a week. Yikes, Double Yikes! We all know I rarely knit monogamously. This pattern is knit from the top down and there are cables on almost every round. That, my friends, is a lot of cables.

Not to keep you in suspense any longer, I finished it the night before she was to leave. That's only half the battle. The other half is it fitting and that she likes it. She is a teen and they are contrary creatures.
Mikey liked it.

In fact, she likes it so much there she wears it just about everyday! The yarn I used is Aslan Trends Royal Alpaca. One of the nicest, softest Alpaca yarns I've knit with.
The ribbing has since stretched out quite a bit, so I took some black elastic thread and crocheted on the wrong side two channels of elastic. Again, Mikey liked it.

We are both happy campers. For now, again, she is a teen.
