The Vagaries of Handpainted Sock Yarn

So here is a picture of a pair of socks knit with the same skein of Colinette Jitterbug yarn. I knit the first sock a few months ago and developed second sock syndrome. I left the yarn, needles, and pattern in the project bag and put it in the parking lot.

Recently I decided to take things out of long-term parking and finish them. I need to see some new works-in-progress on my Ravelry page. Well, would you believe I knit the second sock at a completely different gauge. Unbelievable! I was showing it to Danni and was pointing out how the yarn pooled so differently in the second sock. When she took a closer look, she noticed that I knit the second sock looser! I can't believe it. I had everything in the same bag so I know it was the same needles I used to knit the first sock. By this time I was nearly to the toe. Well, their my socks and that's they was they are going to stay.

Wow! They sure do look different. I love Jitterbug, but I also battled with a skein that did this for a pair of socks for my DH. After all my suffering, I finally asked and he didn't care! It was easy to finish them after that.

Well, glad to hear I'm not the only one! Since they are my socks and I do not want to start over... it is what it is. Generally I don't mind the different ways handpainted yarn can pool - it's just such a vast difference!
